Pine City Natural Area provides vital habitat for the only known population of the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain of Arkansas. The natural area also contains the "Lost Pine of Arkansas." These fairly extensive, high-quality natural stands of loblolly pines are "lost" in the sense that they are an isolated population within the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. As a result, they have become genetically distinct from loblolly pines found elsewhere in the United States. Natural communities present include extensive loblolly pine flatwoods, wet hardwood flatwoods, and saline barrens.
Additional holdings at the natural area consist of former agricultural land that is being restored to loblolly pine-hardwood forest.
