While riding through various parts of the city I realized that in certain areas the number of abandoned houses outweighed the number of houses that were occupied. I also began to see the devastating effect this trend had on these communities. These abandoned structures became a breeding ground for crime. In some areas a slow but steady revitalization is occurring but in other areas the number of abandoned houses continues to grow daily. While photographing abandoned structures I happen to notice the prominence of shadows within the space. In many cases the shadows were more prominent than the space itself. I wanted to incorporate shadows within this series because often when we think of abandonment it is accompanied by darkness. I thought it was important to show that darkness does not always have to be tied with negativity.
