Arts On Tour

The Arts on Tour roster lists a broad spectrum of Arkansas’s finest solo and ensemble performers, individual visual artists and prepared art exhibitions ready for touring within Arkansas. The online AOT listing facilitates the booking process for arts organizations, festival and event planners, schools, civic organizations and government entities interested in contracting with the artists.

The AOT program is designed to reimburse presenters who showcase Arkansas artists listed on the roster. When an AOT artist negotiates a contract with the presenter, the Arkansas Arts Council typically will subsidize 40 percent of the cost of the event as long as funds are available.

New AOT artists are selected each year through a panel process.

The Backstory: The AHFP evolved from meetings with The Garland County Library, the Hot Springs Area Cultural Alliance and was organized by Charlie Moore. The discussion focused on the rural history, culture and music of the Ouachita Mountain region.

The mission of the AHFP: To seek out and preserve the heritage of rural Arkansas through education and entertainment… music, dance, and story telling. To collaborate with the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, the hotbed of Old Time music and tradition preservation. They have encouraged our efforts and we encourage a visit to their wonderful venue.

Long story short: The Arkansas Highlands Folk Project started it’s stringband to bring this preservation effort to Central and SW Arkansas. The support from the Arkansas Arts Council will allow us to travel and reach out to more audiences. Musicians participating in the project include Jenny and Tom Sartain, Judy Warner, Denise Hurd, Ken Tillery, Keith Symanowitz and Charlie Moore.

Our presentation format: Our performances are tailored to the audience and their budget. The full stringband will include a fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass and/or surprise additions by guest musicians. Audience interaction is encouraged at all performances. Depending on budget or audience, we can size a program to meet your needs.

The Genre: We play Old Time Traditional Music. The music that was brought to America from the British Isles, West Africa and parts of Europe… played first in the Appalachians and later in the Ozarks and Ouachitas. Folk tunes…music and dance of the common person. We describe our music as, the music before radio or recordings. Homemade music. It’s the music that preceded country and Bluegrass, although you will recognize a lot of Old Time in these and other genres.
Requirements
We are minimalists, so we believe "Less is More." We play acoustic instruments and may need no amplification for small audiences depending on venue. Larger audience requirements need to be discussed, but a basic PA system with multiple mics may be adequate. A sound system can be provided for an additional fee
Fee
$300 - $2,500, depending on number of musicians, location and type of program requested.
