The mission of the AHFP: To seek out and preserve the heritage of rural Arkansas through education and entertainment… music, dance, and story telling. To collaborate with the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, the hotbed of Old Time music and tradition preservation. They have encouraged our efforts and we encourage a visit to their wonderful venue.
Long story short: The Arkansas Highlands Folk Project started it’s stringband to bring this preservation effort to Central and SW Arkansas. The support from the Arkansas Arts Council will allow us to travel and reach out to more audiences. Musicians participating in the project include Jenny and Tom Sartain, Judy Warner, Denise Hurd, Ken Tillery, Keith Symanowitz and Charlie Moore.
Our presentation format: Our performances are tailored to the audience and their budget. The full stringband will include a fiddle, banjo, guitar, bass and/or surprise additions by guest musicians. Audience interaction is encouraged at all performances. Depending on budget or audience, we can size a program to meet your needs.
The Genre: We play Old Time Traditional Music. The music that was brought to America from the British Isles, West Africa and parts of Europe… played first in the Appalachians and later in the Ozarks and Ouachitas. Folk tunes…music and dance of the common person. We describe our music as, the music before radio or recordings. Homemade music. It’s the music that preceded country and Bluegrass, although you will recognize a lot of Old Time in these and other genres.
