The sound of the Spa City Stompers Jazz Band harkens back to dimly-lit speakeasies of the roaring 1920s and long-forgotten gramophones playing crackling 87s. With the band’s hot rhythms and sweet melodies, audiences find the glamour, mystery, and the excitement of the Jazz Age.
The Spa City Stompers is a traditional-style Dixieland band that plays the great jazz standards of Jellyroll Morton, Louie Armstrong, and many others, with emphasis on tunes from the 1920s and 1930s. The band was formed in 2014 and has played at local and regional venues all around Arkansas. In addition to their regular jazz performances, the band has also performed for churches, playing church hymns in Dixieland style.
Directed by co-band leaders Clyde Pound on keyboards and George “Doc” Ryan on trumpet, the Spa City Stompers bring together experienced Dixieland musicians from throughout central Arkansas. The musical strength of the band lies in its creative arrangements and effective use of dynamics. While serious about Dixieland jazz, the Spa City Stompers also combine good jazz with good times—encouraging fun, sing-a-longs, and dancing.
