Lion and Phoenix Productions’ original children’s theatre play “Buddy the Pirate” struggles with the urge to bully others, and then learns that the real treasure in life is “buried deep within”. Children attending this school matinee embrace Buddy as someone they can relate to in the struggle of identity, confidence, sadness, hurt, and evolving. This deep topic is presented in a fun, musical setting while grounded in moral anti-bully lessons. Buddy can’t seem to find the map left to him by the biggest bully of all, Captain Mean Guy. With the help of Nautical Nate, some crazy songs, and a few eager pirates from the audience, Buddy the Pirate learns about kindness and finds only but a few pieces to the map that’s so important to him. Dejected, but a better man, Buddy never does find missing piece of the map which shows where the treasure is buried. But back in the classroom, each teacher will find the missing piece of the map, with an “X” marking the spot of the treasure buried in our hearts, leading to meaningful discussion in each classroom.
By promoting unity, creating an accepting environment for debate, and interactivity, “Buddy the Pirate” reminds us to be kind at a time when cultural tension is at an all-time high and allows children to learn how to overcome if they exhibit bully behavior or are harassed by bullying.
“Buddy the Pirate” includes a pdf activity packet and teacher’s guide for conversations in the classroom. The visit is accompanied by anti-bully posters for each school or group.
