As an artist I and a musician I often marvel at the many parallels between the two. Growing up in the ‘60s and ‘70s I was exposed to many different forms and styles of music and art. Great technique amazes me but emotion is what moves my soul. For me, it’s the combination of these two forces that create great art and music. A well trained pianist that can play scales and exercises flawlessly at lighting speed can amaze us while the violinist playing a single sustained note at the proper time can bring us to tears. It’s the same in the visual arts. For me I have always admired expert craftsmanship. Modern art was all around and while I found some of it interesting I was stunned when I first saw paintings from the old masters. Yet technique without feeling is like listening to endless scales on the piano. Art like music at its core is communication. If it doesn’t speak to us it’s just decoration & sound.
