Lion and Phoenix Productions’ portrayal of “Harriet Tubman: One Woman’s Journey” follows the heroic journey of Harriet and her work as a leader in the Underground Railroad. As the show opens in the dark, the audience hears the incredible voice of actress/singer Jackie Murray, who also wrote the script, singing a moving rendition of “Wade in the Water”. She addresses the audience as if they are enslaved people who have gathered with her at night to begin the dangerous escape. Then, in Act 2, Harriet greets all the people she helped to escape in a sort of reunion, relaying the triumphant events of the Emancipation Proclamation and her letters from Frederick Douglas. “I never let my train go off the track,” says Harriet, “And I never lost a passenger.” Engaging from the first moment, this one woman show enlightens, inspires and evokes emotion as we see firsthand an example of bravery that forever influenced this nation.
As a historian, Ms. Murray always welcomes the opportunity for a question-and-answer segment or discussion after the show.
The study guide for schools helps to create an imaginative experience for young people to ignite and deepen their quest to understand their collective responsibility to their community. In the case of a school closure or other situation, the show is available to be delivered virtually for video-on-demand or a live streamed performance with question-and-answer time.
