Jalache Davis (She/her) current resident and native of Little Rock, Arkansas is a Black multidisciplinary artist who specializes in painting portraits and figures in environments. She began receiving awards from district competitions for her artwork at the age 13, setting a precedent for her present career goals. Having finished her primary education with a mural she attended Hendrix College where she received two B.A.s in both Art and Sociology/Anthropology. Recently graduated Jalache advocates on behalf of Black communities with similar socio-economic circumstances through her personal practice ArtbyJalache, sorority (Sigma Gamma Rho INC.) and current work at Brandon House Cultural & Performing Arts Center.
“My artwork tends to spotlight what I consider observations of ordinary Black lifestyles. Shying away from representation of overt racism, my works showcase the cultural adaptations in Black communities that have indirect references to systemic racism. Combining shared Black American experiences with my own perception and recollection of the world I am able to paint, draw, and sculpt Black innovation into novelty keepsakes.
I intend to persuade my audience to appreciate how visual arts can shape personal perspectives like beauty standards and shared group interests like community sustenance. Many of my references exist within the context of my personal life as I identify with the group of people I portray and closely work with. As a curator for local artist shows and coordinator of arts programs I can fulfill one of my goals as an artist which is to encourage Black children and artists alike by having represented what they recognize as the real world, not something glorified or demonized.”
