ANHC Herbarium Notes from Nature Plants of Arkansas project transcription WeDigBio

The ANHC hosts four-day events every spring and fall in conjunction with WeDigBio, Worldwide Engagement for Digitizing Biocollections, an international digitization blitz. During WeDigBio, people worldwide transcribe natural history specimens, herbarium specimens, or other physical records into a digital format during the same specified time period, usually over a period of days. The ANHC administrates the Plants of Arkansas project on the community science web platform, Notes from Nature, with a goal to transcribe all herbarium specimens held at Arkansas herbaria or collected from Arkansas.

The ANHC will host a WeDigBio event online from Thursday, April 7 through Sunday, April 10. In addition to providing virtual opportunities to connect via Zoom and transcribe as many specimens as possible, the ANHC wants to hear from you about what you find while transcribing. Here are a few prompts to think about while you transcribe:

  • What was the oldest record you transcribed?
  • What was the funniest place name you ran across?
  • If you could go back in time, which collector would you most like to meet/have met in person to inquire about his/her experiences?
  • What location that you transcribed would you most like to visit in person?
  • Did you run across any plants in your transcription that were also mentioned in any of the talks during the event that made the transcription more meaningful? Bonus point: If so, can you recall the genus and species?
  • Which species did you look up to learn more about?
  • Did a specimen take your breath away, and which one was it?
