MTCC and the Arkansas Travelers celebrate the legacy of Richard “Dick” Allen, the first African American to play for the Travelers. In 1963, six years after the integration of Little Rock Central High School, Little Rock once again became the focal point of an integration milestone as Allen joined the Arkansas Travelers’ roster. MTCC will create a panel that highlights Allen’s life and his later MVP career with the Philadelphia Phillies, showcasing how his remarkable journey continued after his one year in Little Rock. The city, still navigating the social tensions and national scrutiny that followed the Central High crisis, now faced a new test of progress as it responded to Allen’s presence on the field—an experience that again drew attention to how Little Rock confronted issues of race, change, and community identity.
