Over a number of years, the Delta Cultural Center has hosted a special competition, unique to the Arkansas Delta titled "Beans, Greens and Cornbread." Participants compete to earn awards for the best in these three categories, along with a people's choice trophy.

The Delta is known for great food and this contest features cuisine that residents and visitors alike love to taste and compare with how their family members may have prepared them in the past. Some people like collards over turnip greens. Then there is sweet cornbread to traditional. What is the best type of meat to give your beans flavor? Visitors to the DCC that day will find themselves talking with their neighbors or to complete strangers over these very weighty issues. Southerners take their food serious.

Registration is required by the start of this event at 10 a.m. on April 22. Early registration is encouraged to make set-up easier. Entrants should also make enough to provide not only the judges small samples, but event patrons. There will be a People's Choice Award given which will be determined by visitors at the contest.

The 6th Annual Beans, Greens and Cornbread Contest will be held from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m. in the Hunt Center, located at 105 Missouri Street in Helena, Arkansas. This building is across from the Depot Museum and down the street from our DCC Visitor's Center. Entrants will need to remain with their food during the contest, since much of the fun comes from interaction with fellow competitors.
