I take pleasure in drawing and painting a wide range of subjects, from figures to seascapes, from still life to complex architecture. A subject will speak to me of possibilities, and soon those possibilities become a need to capture its essence in my art. Sometimes it is the shapes, sometimes the subtle color shifts, or it could be even the feeling I have as I view the scene. Sometimes a scene will just take my breath away, and I have to paint it. Because I paint in a variety of mediums, the scene and mood dictate whether I choose watercolor, oil, pastel, charcoal or pen and ink as my partner in creating the painting. I generally paint in a representational style but often leave the door open to broader interpretations as my vision for the piece unfolds. I most enjoy plays of light juxtaposed with deep shadows. I use these high contrasts to set the mood, achieve focus and serve as a pathway through my work.
