The body of my work is primarily pen-and-ink drawing done over a span of 60 years. My interest is largely figurative with a narrative overtone. This in part stems from my background in literature and science. I have a special interest in the human figure, producing as well as teaching figure drawing over the last 45 years.

A combination of background studies and personality drives my interest in narrative. I believe the reward for me as an artist comes through my work’s relating to those who look at it, and like me, the majority of people look for things in art that speak to their own experiences and interests, most easily recognized through literal images. Among the most interesting to humans are humans, particularly when there is an element of story and enigma.

I like designing and often find that part of the art process most challenging and satisfying for me is composition. Having worked with the pen for so long I struggle to see the art as something outside of a designed page. For the last several years I have been helped with this by turning to paint, both oil and especially watercolor. I find that watercolor, combined with the inherent drawing element is more comfortable for me than other painting media.

I am at a stage in my career where the major goal I have is finding the processes and the subjects that satisfy my creative needs and the habits I have developed over these many years. An extension of that is pleasure in teaching, in trying to find better ways to share whatever skills I have acquired, and as a result, understanding them better myself.
