My graphic nonfiction aims to capture innocent yet astute concepts of identity — as seen in both the early civil rights movement of the 1960s and culture wars now. My narratives build on emotional as well as factual truths — revealing my lifelong exposure to Southern tall tales, as well as my belief in the scientific method. Over the past few decades, my creative focus has progressed from sequential painting in triptych format to sequential drawings and digital media in comics and graphic narratives. I begin now with the script. Then I sketch – developing characters through layered techniques in photo editing software. Sketching reveals more of the story to tell. I believe that a two-page spread is missing a powerful opportunity if component text, images, and frames do not form one super image. I unite visuals through dynamic patterns in balanced compositions based on scale and proportion. My work is grounded in fun and in a desire to show how differences bring people together.
