As America prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence in 2026, Arkansas is highlighting its own rich history through the arts. The Arkansas250 Commission, the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, and the Arkansas Arts Council are issuing a call for a commissioned artwork that reflects Arkansas’ history, culture and contributions to the nation. 

This special semiquincentennial artwork will serve as a lasting tribute to Arkansas’ role in shaping the American story. 

“Art has always been one of the most powerful ways to tell a story, and this commissioned piece will help capture Arkansas’ role in America’s journey over the past 250 years,” said Shea Lewis, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism and chairman of the Arkansas250 Commission. “As we prepare for this milestone anniversary, we want to ensure Arkansas’ story is represented not just in words and exhibits, but also in a work of art that will endure for generations.”

Artists must be 18 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen and an Arkansas resident for at least one year. Applicants must submit a completed application form, up to three sample drawings, a resume, artist’s statement, and portfolio samples. Following review, representatives from the Arkansas250 Commission will meet with three to five finalists for formal in-person presentations before selecting the final artist. 

The chosen artist will be commissioned to create an acrylic or oil painting on a 36-by-48-inch wood-supported canvas, produced in a realistic style. Submissions will be evaluated on technical merit, originality, composition and subject matter that aligns with the goals of the project.

The selected artwork will be purchased for $20,000 and unveiled and exhibited at one or more of the Division of Arkansas Heritage museums with additional opportunities for display at state government buildings, including the Arkansas State Capitol. 

“Arkansas artists bring a unique perspective to America’s story,” said Marty Ryall, director of Arkansas Heritage. “This commissioned artwork will honor Arkansas’ past, celebrate our cultural heritage, and give Arkansas a chance to see themselves reflected in the broader celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary.”

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders established the Arkansas250 Commission in July 2024 to coordinate Arkansas’ participation in the national commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary. In addition to this commissioned artwork, Arkansas250 initiatives include historic markers, flags presented to county courthouses, and a statewide multi-museum exhibit. The commission is also working with local community leaders to encourage celebrations across Arkansas that reflect the state’s diverse history and people.
