HOT SPRINGS -- More than 100 people turned out Thursday, May 2, to honor LongHua Xu, the 2019 Arkansas Living Treasure, at a reception at the Hot Springs Convention Center at 134 Convention Blvd.

Artists, artisans and arts supporters visited with Xu and congratulate him on earning one of Arkansas's top awards. The Arkansas Living Treasure program annually recognizes an Arkansas artist who excels in the creation of a traditional craft and who preserves and advances his or her craft through community outreach and by teaching others.

Xu, who immigrated from China more than 30 years ago, was nominated and chosen for his outstanding contributions to the Hot Springs art community and for his masterful woodcarvings. Gary Simmons, who nominated Xu, talked about how courageous, talented and enterprising Xu is and his impact on the community.

Stacy Hurst, director of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, talked about the importance of preserving Arkansas's rich, cultural heritage and recognizing those who contribute to it. "I'm so pleased to be here to honor Mr. Xu," Hurst said.
