Friends:

I know this might seem strange to say, and I can’t believe that I’m saying it, but my March has been busier than February, which is Black History Month. So that’s why I’m taking an intentional pause to share few updates from me to you.

My daughter had the opportunity to participate in an oratory competition and she shared the biography of the extraordinary Bessie Smith, the international blues icon. I was so proud of her not just because she’s following in my footsteps, I was a speech champ in my day! No, my beaming came from the fact that she chose to compose, pushed through every doubt and used her voice to amplify Black excellence. And she plans to do it again next year!

Fast forward a bit, MTCC partnered with the Nest, a new women owned co-working space, in Little Rock, for “Leaning into Legacy: Honoring Arkansas Native Daisy Bates.” I was part of an amazing panel discussion on what leaning into the legacy of Daisy Bates looks like. The authentic energy, truth and sharing that happened in the space was transformative. The opportunity to stand in the shadow of such a profound woman in history who impacted our world was an honor. Her story of triumph and perseverance in such a turbulent time in civil rights history is awe inspiring. One of the most important things that I learned from the Daisy Bates story and that I’m learning from my daughter, is to “just do it anyway.” In the face of fear and uncertainty push through. Our voices are strong. Our ancestors are with us. We rise together. Representation Matters.

As we turn the page, and see the beginnings of spring, bunnies aren’t the only thing hopping. Here at MTCC, things are jumping at our crib as we are pulling out the vinyl and the bamboo earrings for our newest exhibit, “And the Beat Don’t Stop: 50 Years of Hip-Hop.” I smile every single time I think about it. I remember my first experience with hip-hop, it was with my dad and a single verse from The Sugarhill Gang song “Rapper’s Reprise.” From then to now, I think about how much the culture has shaped the globe. What I love most is if you ask each person what it means to them, everyone has a different opinion and idea. You don’t want to miss our opening on Thursday, April 7, with a DJ battle, break dancing and more. I can’t wait to see you then!

You know that I would never miss an opportunity to allow you to give to our wonderful world class nationally accredited institution of Black Excellence. We are still working towards our goals for completion of our renovations for our exhibitions.
