The Western Arkansas Master Naturalists (WAMN) recently collected native seed for habitat restoration at H.E. Flanagan Prairie Natural Area. The WAMN has adopted H.E. Flanagan Prairie through the ANHC’s Adopt a Natural Area Program (ANAP).

The WAMN and ANHC staff spent a day in November collecting seed from a section of Flanagan Prairie. The volunteers then dispersed the seed onto a portion of the prairie that had been burned in September during a prescribed burn. The September prescribed burn prepared the soil at Flanagan Prairie for habitat restoration and planting of native prairie seeds.

Flanagan Prairie, located in Franklin County, is among the few remaining remnants of the more extensive Cherokee Prairie Complex that formerly occupied approximately 135,000 acres of the western portion of the Arkansas Valley ecoregion of Arkansas.

By participating in the ANAP, groups help the ANHC with periodic stewardship work, one-time projects, research, and species monitoring. Individuals or groups are encouraged to contact us about future volunteer activities. Visit our Volunteer page on the website for more information.
