The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center will present a discussion with Candacy Taylor, the award-winning author, photographer and cultural documentarian who created a multidisciplinary project based on "The Green Book," in an in-person event at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the museum. The event will also be livestreamed to select libraries statewide.

Taylor is the curator and content specialist of the exhibition “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” which is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhibition is at MTCC through Aug. 1.

Since 2013, Taylor has crisscrossed the U.S. five times, including trips to Arkansas, to scout and photograph “Green Book” sites. Taylor’s work has been featured in over 50 media outlets, including The Atlantic, CBS Sunday Morning, The Guardian (UK edition), The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Newsweek, PBS Newshour and The Wall Street Journal.

Taylor, who lives in Harlem, New York, was a fellow at the Hutchins Center at Harvard University under the direction of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and her projects have been commissioned and funded by numerous organizations, including the Library of Congress, National Geographic, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Taylor will make a special, in-person appearance at MTCC. Her presentation also will be livestreamed to some libraries across Arkansas. A list of libraries will be made available at www.mosaictemplarscenter.com closer to the event.

The in-person event at MTCC will have outdoor, covered seating available and will be moderated by Ryan Davis, chairman of the MTCC advisory board and director of Children International at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

"The Negro Motorist Green Book” offers an immersive look at the reality of travel for African Americans in mid-century America and how the annual guide served as an indispensable resource for the nation’s rising African American middle class and evidence of a vibrant business class. "The Negro Motorist Green Book" is made possible through the support of Exxon Mobil Corp.
