ELABORATION

The Brown Residence at 306 Market Street in Stamps, Arkansas, was built in the year 1889 to 1890. The original owners and builders of the property were the Brown family, who was involved in the organization and construction of the Bodcaw Lumber Company. This residence was constructed by craftsmen, carpenters, millwrights and laborers of Bodcaw Lumber Company who built the mill and the company housing which comprised most of the town of Stamps.

The residence was constructed for the newly married J.R. Brown and his wife Sally. The parlor of the residence was used as the boardroom for the lumber company while the lumber company's offices were being constructed.

After the Brown family moved to different quarters in 1902 the residence was then sold to Mr. Buchanan who in turn rented the residence to a Mrs. Barns. Mrs. Barns managed the building as a boarding house and later added a sleeping porch and two additional rooms to accommodate the extra guests. Mr.J.W. Gladney later obtained title to the property and in turn sold the building to his brother, and present owner, Sam L. Gladney in 1959.
