Make your nominations for the 2020 Arkansas Food Hall of Fame

Department of Arkansas Heritage - Monday, October 07, 2019

It’s once again time to celebrate the Great State of the Plate!

The nomination period for the 2020 Arkansas Food Hall Fame, the statewide program that recognizes what’s great in Arkansas food, is officially open and Arkansas Heritage is accepting your choices for the best restaurants, food-events and individuals.

We are currently accepting nominations in five categories

  • Arkansas Food Hall of Fame – This award recognizes those long-standing restaurants that have become legendary attractions in Arkansas.
  • Proprietor of the Year – This award honors a chef, cook and/or restaurant owner in Arkansas who has made significant achievements in the food industry.
  • Food-Themed Event – This award honors a community food-themed event or festival that makes our state a great place to live and visit.
  • Gone But Not Forgotten – Remembers the collective culinary legacy of a once-and-always influential Arkansas restaurant that has since ceased operations.
  • People’s Choice – Identifies the public’s favorite. This award is truly in the hands of Arkansans. The restaurant or food truck that receives the highest number of votes wins.

When the program was created in 2016, Arkansas Heritage wanted to spark a conversation about the state’s unique food culture, and the enthusiastic response from Arkansans has been truly amazing. Last year was our biggest year with nearly 650 nominations received, and for the first time in the program’s short history, there were nominations made in all 75 of Arkansas’s counties.

The program has highlighted the diversity of Arkansans food traditions, something that has been reflected in nominations. There are so many different traditions surrounding food; and even though Arkansas has some fantastic fine dining, we’ve seen that the special nature of food tradition isn’t necessarily determined by extravagant menus. Many of our most cherished places serve good, simple comfort food. This can be seen in the people, places and events that have been inducted into the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame and we believe that this variety will continue as a hallmark of the program.

We are expecting another great year for the program, but that really depends on the people of Arkansas. We’ll continue to help tell the story of Arkansas food, but the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame needs you to tell us what’s special about Arkansas food. Please make a nomination by October 31!

The 2020 inductees will be announced on February 24 at a ceremony at Ron Robinson Theater in downtown Little Rock.
