Join HAM for the second year of the Arkansas Foodways Dinner Series

Historic Arkansas Museum (HAM) will again host the “History is Served: Arkansas Foodways Dinner Series” in 2019.

The program, which is in its second year, explores Arkansas’s food heritage through intimate dinners that use history as a culinary framework for each dinner’s creation. Enlisting the help of notable Arkansas chefs, this year’s dinners will focus on foods that are important to Arkansas’s history and culture. This year’s dinners and chefs include:

April 18 - “Catfish Tales in Four Courses” with Chef Scott Rains of Table 28

June 6 – “If Reasons Were as Plenty as Blackberries: Arkansas Fruits and Berries" with Jon Arrington of The Root Café

July 11 – “The Genealogy of Food Traditions: The Summer Vegetable Plate” with Scott McGehee of Yellow Rocket Concepts

The dinner series is a program of HAM’s Arkansas Foodways Initiative, which was created by the museum’s Foundation Board. Building on the museum’s past foodways efforts, the initiative supports programming related to Arkansas’s food heritage and dovetails with the Department of Arkansas Heritage’s (DAH) emphasis on Arkansas’s food heritage as seen in the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame.

In its inaugural year, HAM hosted four sold-out dinners that focused on historical eras of Arkansas, exploring the food and culture of the people who played an important role in developing Arkansas’s food heritage. The chefs who participated in the first year include Gilbert Alaquinez and Michael Selig (Pre-Colonial Arkansas and the Quapaw Tribe), Mary Beth Ringgold (Colonial Arkansas and French and Spanish Colonists), Shanna Merriweather and Capi Peck (Territorial Arkansas - Scottish & German Settlers), Evette Brady and Tim Morton (Arkansas’s Southern Foodways - African Americans).

Tickets for this year’s dinner series are $60 for the general public and $45 for museum members. Tickets for the April 18th dinner are available online through the museum’s website. The first dinner is sold-out.
