Do you like exploring maps, perusing Google Earth or solving location puzzles? Then you might like georeferencing herbarium specimens! Georeferencing is the process of translating the location information from a plant specimen label into a GPS point on a map. The ANHC coordinates the digitization of all Arkansas herbarium specimens and we need volunteers interested in learning how to georeference specimens. After training, this activity can be done anywhere with a computer and internet connection.
Training sessions are being offered in conjunction with the national Spring Worldwide Engagement for Digitizing Biocollections (WeDigBio) transcription events. During this specified time period, people from around the world digitize biodiversity collections, often competing to see what group completes the most transcriptions. Georeferencing training sessions will be offered at the Department of Arkansas Heritage Headquarters at 1100 North St., Little Rock. Training events will be available, depending on interest for each date, on Thursday, April 13, noon to 5 p.m.; Friday, April 14, noon to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, April 16, noon to 5 p.m. To register, contact ANHC Botanist and Arkansas Herbarium Digitization Coordinator, Diana Soteropoulos at [email protected] Be sure to include which dates (April 13, 14 or 16) you are available.
