Richard Spilman

Education Coordinator

During the Civil War, American Quakers started a school for African American children around Helena and Phillips County. This would eventually become Southland College. Dr. Cherise Jones-Branch, a Professor of History at Arkansas State University, will lead a round table discussion of how Southland College impacted the lives of African Americans well into the 20th century. In addition to her work with Arkansas State, Ms. Branch has recently published a book titled, "Crossing the Line: Women's Interracial Activism in South Carolina during and after World War II." For more information on this program, contact Education Coordinator Richard Spilman at [email protected] or call (870) 338-4350
