Lorance Creek (401 Kb)
Lorance Creek Natural Area is primarily a deep swamp that spreads out
along both sides of Lorance Creek. The entire system is a diverse mosaic
of open water, cypress-tupelo gum, beaver ponds, and sandy washes overlain
with groves of swamp blackgum. All these features are interconnected by a
complex network of small streams and seeps which support a rich aquatic
flora.
Flanagan Prairie (317 Kb)
Flanagan Prairie Natural Area is a fine example of the tall grass prairies
that formed an important component of the pre settlement vegetation of
Arkansas. This acreage is a remnant of what were originally known as the
Cherokee Prairies.
Washington County Courthouse (652 Kb)
"Built in 1905, the Washington County Courthouse provides Fayetteville,
northwest Arkansas, indeed the entire state with a notable example of the
Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style that so strongly influenced the
American scene in the late nineteenth century."
Ewilda Miller Robinson's Ballgown (218 Kb)
This beautiful gown was worn by Ewilda Miller Robinson to the Inauguration of Gov. Joe T. Robinson in 1913. The gown is a one-piece cream silk brocade and lace trimmed in pearls, beads and rhinestones. The v-neckline is framed with a lace bertha collar and drapes in the front and drops in the back below the waist. The flared skirt has a train and is draped in the back for a soft bustle effect.
Mrs. Robinson's gown is one of 25 inaugural gowns presented in the First Families of Arkansas's exhibit at the Old State House Museum in Little Rock.
Moro Creek Bottoms Natural Area (164 Kb)
Located in Cleveland and Calhoun
counties, supports the finest known stand of lowland oak-sweetgum forest
in the West Gulf Coastal Plain of Arkansas. A high-quality stand of
baldcypress borders the creek, and several cherrybark oak, water oak, and
sweetgum trees on the tract exceed three feet in diameter at breast height
and tower more than 90 feet above the forest floor. A tract of 78 acres
was added to the System of Natural Areas in 1987.
