The 2009 Arkansas Heritage Month theme is "Only in Arkansas: Exploring Our Natural Heritage.” During the month of May, Arkansans are invited to highlight the wonderful natural riches that exist only in Arkansas. Who we are has a lot to do with where we are.
From the lowlands to the uplands, from the Delta to the Ozarks, Arkansas is remarkably diverse and unique in its natural heritage. What are the natural wonders and sights in your community? Think also about those unique marvels created by man inspired by nature: the world’s longest pedestrian bridge of its kind in Little Rock, the only diamond mine open to the public in Murfreesboro, the longest-running blues radio show still broadcasting from historic Helena.
Heritage Month is the time to promote such unique qualities to your community, the surrounding area and the entire state. Schools might sponsor nature walks, field trips or science programs to inspire local artists for a drawing contest, a photography exhibition or a poetry reading. Communities might develop an “only in Arkansas”-based play or puppet show to be presented at their local library, museum or schools. A group of residents could design a nature trail through a park or plant native plants around public buildings.
Arkansas Heritage Month is a time to join with others around the state in preserving, protecting and promoting our natural history by hosting a special Heritage Month event. Join with us as we recognize Arkansas heritage.
