Don’t let your kids tell you they’re bored this summer! The Department of Arkansas Heritage has summer day camps happening across its divisions to keep kids’ minds and bodies active.
- June 5-8, Delta Days Day Camp (Delta Cultural Center, Helena)
Take a trip back in time with this highly interactive and entertaining day camp geared for children between the ages of 10-13. Experience life the way it was lived over 150 years ago as we play a wide variety of old-fashioned games, activities and crafts. Have you ever wondered what it was like to fish with a cane pole, make a yarn doll, eat food from a Dutch oven or write with a quill pen? All of these activities and more will be included.
Delta Days Day Camp is free, but registration is required. Camp will be 9 a.m. to noon June 5-8. Please contact the education coordinator by phone at (870) 338-4350 to register.
- June 11-15, Pioneer Day Camp, First Session (Historic Arkansas Museum, Little Rock)
- June 18-22, Pioneer Day Camp, Second Session (Historic Arkansas Museum, Little Rock)
Every summer pioneer day campers have fun as they explore
what life was like in Arkansas more than 150 years ago. This year campers will explore the food heritage of the state and those who lived on our block.
They will get to prepare Native American, Scottish and German, African, and American recipes. They’ll visit the blacksmith in his shop and see how
he would make kitchen utensils.
Each day, campers will enjoy crafts, pioneer games, dancing and much, much more. On the last day of camp, parents are invited to watch the children show off their pioneer dance skills.
FIRST SESSION: June 11 - 15 (for rising 3rd and 4th graders)
SECOND SESSION: June 18 - 22 (for rising 5th and 6th graders)
Camp will be from 8 a.m. to noon each day. Cost is $85 per camper; $65 for museum members. Register at HistoricArkansas.org.
- June 19-July 14, Lorenzo Smith Music Academy (Mosaic Templars Cultural Center,
Little Rock)
The Lorenzo Smith Music Academy, formerly known as Mosaic Music Camp, is a fun opportunity for musicians in 4th-12th grades to learn tuning, stage presence and music fundamentals. Sandra Smith, former Little Rock School District art teacher and administrator of the Lorenzo Smith Music Academy, describes the camp as a way to "get students motivated and excited about music." Each year the camp concludes with a concert that is open to the public.
