Heritage Month Grants

Every May is Arkansas Heritage Month

Each year, we encourage all Arkansans to celebrate, discover and enjoy our state’s heritage during May.

Since 1982, Arkansans have celebrated Heritage Month with festivals, special studies, concerts, nature walks, tours and much more! Arkansans host scores of events in communities across the state, all proudly proclaiming the message that Arkansas heritage is worth knowing and celebrating. Heritage Month grants are available each year to assist organizations and communities in holding Heritage Month events.

2018 Theme

Off the Beaten Path: Explore and Enjoy Arkansas’s Natural Heritage

The May 2018 Heritage Month theme, “Off the Beaten Path: Explore and Enjoy Arkansas’s Natural Heritage,” will highlight the work of the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC), one of the divisions of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. ANHC works to conserve the state’s natural landscape and biological diversity through research, stewardship of public lands and educational outreach.

In planning an event or program for Heritage Month 2018, think about the region surrounding your community. What natural landscapes offer activities such as birding, hiking, nature study or photography? In what ways does your region enjoy its natural areas and landscapes? What plants or animals are common in your area? Whatever you choose to present, plan an event that will honor your community and its people. Create something that will celebrate authentic Arkansas and make others want to come and explore your region’s natural heritage.

2021 – Arkansas Historic Preservation Program
2022 – Arkansas State Archives
2023 – Arkansas Arts Council
2024 – Old State House Museum
2025 – Delta Cultural Center

Grant Process

Grants are available to help communities and organizations develop meaningful Heritage Month events and programs in their areas. The guidelines are:

  • The grant process typically opens each year in October, with an application deadline in mid-December.
  • Grants will be awarded in February for Heritage Month events to be held in May.
  • Grant awards can be up to $5,000 for a qualifying event.
  • Grant applications must reflect the current year’s theme.
  • Grant awards require a 25 percent match, either in cash and/or in-kind.
  • The project must occur during the month of May.
  • The applicant must be a non-profit or not-for-profit organization.
  • The applicant must not be an agency of local, county or state government. However, collaborative efforts, such as friends groups involving state agencies, are acceptable.
  • Grants will not be awarded to fund ongoing operating cost of the organization.
